Shopping For Formal Dresses In Plus Sizes

Expert Article By: Chirsty Diaz

You have a big event scheduled, and you haven't a thing to wear. Don't despair! The selection of formal dresses in plus sizes has never been greater with the growing number of specialty retailers that cater to full-figured women. Whether you are in need of a bridesmaid gown, a prom dress, or a full wedding ensemble, you can find a bevy of choices. Before you head to your local mall, though you'll need a few guidelines for shopping for formal dresses in plus sizes.

Many special event dresses are by special order only. This means that you'll be measured for your dress, and the shop will place an order with the manufacturer. Generally, the retailer will ask for a deposit of up to 50 percent with the remainder due at the time you receive the dress.

While some special order, formal dresses in plus sizes can be ordered and received in less than a month, you can expect a wedding or bridesmaid gown to take up to six months for delivery. So, it is essential to plan ahead.

If you are short on time, there are many options for purchasing formal dresses off the rack. Boutiques that cater to plus size women and large department stores will have a bounty of different styles. You may also want to try searching online retailers, and there are many of them that specialize in plus size formal wear. If you are looking for a one of a kind gown, consider perusing the racks of vintage clothing shops or consulting with a dressmaker who can design a gown just for you.

As you sift through the different dress options, keep in mind the three "C's" of dress selection - cut, color, and comfort. First, look for a style that is flattering to your body type. Larger figures often look good in halter style dresses.

Then, consider the appropriate color. Perhaps, you need to stick with a color scheme of the wedding or party. If you have carte blanche to pick the color you want, you may want to select a dark shade that will slenderize.

Finally, comfort is of the utmost importance, as you will probably be spending several hours in the dress. Try on gowns and dresses with the right undergarments, and see how they fit and feel. If you have to tug on straps or suck in your tummy, you probably need a different size or style.

So, go ahead and look forward to that special occasion. With a little advanced planning you can have the perfect formal look that will give you the confidence to strut your stuff.

Voting Question: Why can't I ever accept my appearence?

I can never be happy with the way I look. I'm 20 years old, have a slim figure, I'm more or less healthy.... There's nothing obviously wrong with my face, except my nose is too big. And my cheeks are too chubby and I get these stupid dimples when I smile. And my forehead is too big. I think I'm kind of ugly. A lot of people say I'm so beautiful or stunning- ok that sounded really obnoxious, but it's the truth. And the fact is I will never believe them. I think they are just saying it to be nice or they are lying to me. I don't understand it at all. I get stared at by people a lot, my husband tells me it's because I'm so beautiful, and he gets so angry at me because he said I can't see how beautiful I am, and he's even made us go home on a night out before because apparently "too many guys are staring.". I think they are looking at me because I have a weird face. I always had issues with my weight and used to have a kind of eating disorder. And when i was younger I had braces, bad fashion sense, a little overweight and didn't know how to style my hair. I was sort of a nerd. Everyone said I changed beyond recognition, but I guess my mind is still where it used to be- insecure, shy, weird nerd. I'm so critical of myself always, even when people compliment me. When guys used to compliment me or flirt I think it was just to get into my pants. I can never accept compliments. I just wish I could be more confident and happy with myself. I get so much reassurance from really nice people and I just reject it all the time. I can't see it at all. I mean when I look in the mirror, I see a normal looking girl, not that pretty, but ok. When I look closer, I start to criticise everything. Occasionally I get a rush of super-confidence and i look at myself and think, hey, I'm actually pretty! but it's always short-lived and then I go back to... ugh I look terrible. Why? What can I do to ever change this? I feel like I will be this insecure ugly person forever... Does anyone else feel this way?

Open Question: I don't think my parents like what I wear?

I want to wear stuff that I don't think my parents will like... Its not anything that exposes anything but I like playsuits and tops that are in fashion but I don't think my parents would like it and they push down my confidence if that makes sense... What should I do? (I'm 12 btw) They haven't TOLD me not to wear them... they don't even know what i'm into but i don't know what they would think:/

Voting Question: Afraid to express myself with clothes?

I'm a senior in high school, male, and when I graduate I want to be able to reinvent my clothing style a little. I don't think I really know anything about fashion, I simply only know what looks good to me, but otherwise I don't know what style to wear! But I do think that average American guy’s clothes are BORING and sloppy. For now I've been going along with it but I want to break out of that just a little. Also, I'm naturally shy with low self-confidence. IT’S PART OF MY PERSONALITY. I'm not comfortable being open about myself. Our society so strongly dictates what men can and can't wear (e.g., "only buffs guys can wear tank tops" and "no skinny jeans" etc.). I don't want to conform but I don't want to be judged. And people don’t like my body time. I'm small and skinny and people only think "buff" guys can anything off. I’m fine with my body but nobody else would seem to be. There’s no culture where I live so I can’t find good clothes. My parents will only let me shop online on Amazon, but the selection is still limited and there are few, if any, extra small clothes (and I wouldn’t be able to try them on). PLEASE don’t tell me to just stop caring what other people think. THAT FORM OF ADVICE IS CRAP BECAUSE IT’S WHO I AM!!! So yeah... I hate our culture so I avoid people. I'm an artist and aesthetic value and beauty are important to me, so I hate the clothes I have to wear but I don't think I'll be able to find clothes that I'll be pleased with. I feel like I can never happily express myself due to lack of options and fear of judgement. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO! Guess I'll just let my disaffection and distress manifest itself in my art, unless anyone here can help me work out my issues.

Voting Question: Help! FASHION EMERGENCY! One of my friends wore THIS to a pool party?

http://fuzzylizzie.com/myPictures/swimsuits/swim11.jpg One of my friends seriously wore that, along with shorts, stockings, and swimshoes. Like in the 1910s. Why does she have such a horrible taste in fashion? I had her come to a pool party so the guy she likes could see her all sexy in a bikini, but she wore that. And the worst part? This is nowhere near the height of her fashion disaster - she usually dresses goth, and not the cool bondage goth of the 80s, but the retarded goth that wears either victorian dresses or vintage dresses. It isn't like she is fat or has low confidence, so I don't know why she would wear something like this. And apparently it is legitimate swimwear, not just a dress.

Resolved Question: Advice on Drag Club Etiquette?

A group of us straight people plan on taking a young 18-year old gay man into NYC tonite and we want to take him to a drag club. I'm the only one who has ever been to a drag club, and that was in England 20 years ago. So, is there any particular etiquette we should be aware of? I was watching RuPaul's drag race and he mentioned that most queens earn their income from "tips" and he mentioned a drag bag. How does this work? I do know in strip clubs you can just tuck some cash into a g-string, but someone I can imagine a guy wanting anyone possibly messing with his tuck. RuPaul and the contestants on his show refer to each other as "girls, ladies, and b itches." Do drag queens pefer to be referred to as "girls?" Will it be possible to have some one-on-one time with drag queens? This young man is a lost soul in the world, and it the few days he has been staying with me, he likes "dressing up" and it is evident that under the sullen "the world hates me" mantle he's carrying around, he has quite a flair for fashion. We were thinking that introducing him into the drag world might give him some confidence if not some direction, so I was hoping that perhaps he could spend some time taking to the queens. (Up here in bum phuck New York there are no gay bars let alone drag clubs). Any help would be appreciated. And, if you're in NYC do you have any recommendations for a club? We'd like to dine and enjoy a show, but perhaps in a smallish, more intimate setting. This will be the first time this young man will have real exposure to "the gay world," so I'd like it to be as positive as possible. Thanks in advance for any help.
